Episode 3: Licensing and Authorization

TAIP President Alex Batten leads the discussion with Ayla International School Principal Puteri Zailan and a founder and Director of Youhou Eiken Kyoukai Mayumi Murata, covering licensing and authorization of early childhood care facilities in Japan.

Although there are many variations in rules and procedures based on municipality, we discuss the main framework of hoikuen, youchien, and kodomoen. We also talk about the different authorizations, such as ninka and ninka-gai.

Puteri Zailan also talks about her experience becoming a foreign hoikushi in Japan.

Episode 2: Learning Through Play

TAIP Secretary and Principal of Komazawa Park International School, Merete Kropp, leads a discussion about play and play-based learning with ASIJ Early Learning Center Director, Christy Carrillo, and Ohana International School Assistant Director, John Adduru.

Our discussion this episode is about the role of play in the classroom. We discuss our definitions of play, and how we use play in our schools. How we handle rough or risky play. We also talk about the role of play in developing executive function, how we document play, and how we explain these topics with parents.

Episode 1: Raising Bilingual Children, is available in to TAIP Members in the Members Section.

Provocations for Learning

Presented by Elana Leigh
Date: November 2, 2019
Play is the best way for a young child to learn. In the early years of a child’s life the way they learn to play, the resources they play with and the kind of engagement they ‘step’ into will contribute enormously to their development.

Environments should provide a place where children have opportunities to explore, learn and develop with the support of sensitive, knowledgeable adults. There should be access to prompts, artefacts and provocations to stimulate ideas and thought journeys.

Feb 22 Event Cancellation Notice

Dear Members and Conference Participants,

We must regretfully announce the cancellation of the Autism Charity Conference originally scheduled for Saturday, February 22nd. A lot of time and effort went into this event and it was not an easy decision.

Unfortunately various details regarding the coronavirus outbreak and the logistics of the event has caused us to conclude that for reasons of safety and risk management, it is no longer possible to hold this event as planned.

We apologize and assure you that we would like to reschedule the event in the future. But given the current situation we cannot yet give an exact date.

We would like to thank Autism Partnership and K International School of Tokyo for all their support and efforts. A lot of people gave us a lot to try and make this event happen and we deeply appreciate these efforts.

Thank you for your understanding, and please contact president17@tokyopreschools.org with any questions.

Sincerely,

TAIP Board of Directors
