RIE’s Educaring Approach: Caregiving as Curriculum

In this two-hour session, we will cover how respectful caregiving creates trust between adult and child, and offers many opportunities for cognitive and social-emotional learning. If caregivers slow down for things like diaper changes and dressing, babies and toddlers are able to track what is happening and actively participate in their own care. A child feels very differently about themselves, the adult, and the situation when their cooperation is invited, and when they feel they have some control over what is happening to their bodies. With a combination of video observation, activities, and discussion, adult learners will have the opportunity to see caregiving from the child’s point-of-view.
