RIE’s Educaring Approach: Movement and Play as Curriculum in the Sensorimotor Stage

Sometimes it is difficult for adults to have faith that 0-3 aged children are active learners who customize their own curriculum according to their unique timetables of development and style of engagement. Magda Gerber, the founder of RIE, famously said, “Be careful what you teach; you might interfere with what they are learning.” This session will give adult learners the chance to become familiar with the stages of natural gross motor development, and to observe infants and toddlers learning at their own pace and in their own ways. There will be opportunities to see examples of uninterrupted play as well as selective intervention, and to discuss how free movement and free play, along with sensitive caregiving, can add up to an optimal learning environment for children from birth to three with the support of attentive adults.
